Birte Lilienthal

I started freelancing as a professional translator when still at university, mostly in the fantasy genre. After getting degrees in Comparative Literature, English and German Philology as well as in German as a Foreign Language, I worked as a magazine editor, book editor, professional reader and, of course, as a translator, with the focus now on the romance genre.

I’ve been reading romance novels for more than 25 years. As a professional reader I’ve assessed manuscripts and novels for German publishers LYX, CORA, MIRA, Droemer Knaur and UBooks to help them decide on what to acquire for translation.

At UBooks I’ve been responsible for expanding their romance line, evaluating manuscripts both in German and English, and worked with German writers like Kristina Günak and Kim Landers. For LYX I’ve edited translated texts by Charlaine Harris, Nalini Singh, Ilona Andrews and Meljean Brook.

In the romance genre I have translated books by Lisa Kleypas, Candace Camp, Nicola Cornick, Lisa Marie Rice and Michelle Willingham for LYX, CORA and MIRA.

For LoveLetter magazine, Germany’s first and only romance magazine, I have translated short stories and articles by as well as interviews with Lara Adrian, Zoë Archer, Jennifer Ashley, Mary Balogh, Jo Beverley, Suzanne Brockmann, Loretta Chase, Kresley Cole, Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer, Sandy Curtis, Sylvia Day, Christine Feehan, Gaelen Foley, Tess Gerritsen, Anne Gracie, Elizabeth Hoyt, Eloisa James, Marjorie M. Liu, Kinley McGregor, Julia Quinn, Karen Rose, Nalini Singh…

My translations for the indie market started with the first three novels in the “Four weddings and a fiasco” series by Lucy Kevin (Bella Andre).
